Different Ways to Game

Every type of gamer is valid, just as every type of gaming system is also valid. There is no one way to be a "real" gamer when it comes to choosing a system to game on.

Mobile gaming

Any game that can be played on a phone or tablet that is "mobile" or on-the-go, which can be played nearly anywhere.

PC/ Mac Gaming or Computer Gaming

PC stands for personal computer, which is just a quick way to say gaming on a desktop computer that plugs into the wall and is either stationary or portable. Most PC gamers play on desktops, which cannot be taken to other locations without moving a monitor, mouse, keyboard, and tower. (A tower is an actual computer itself, which is usually a large rectangle).

PC Gaming has become more popular in recent years due to the availability of interchangeable parts and cheaper game costs.

Laptop gaming definitely falls under the PC/ Mac category, but as laptops have greater difficulty powering computer games, they are less common for hardcore gamers. ("Hardcore gamers" will be defined below). There are, however, new and improved gaming laptops that are meant for people who travel often or prefer laptops in general.

Mac stands for Macintosh, which is an Apple brand computer or laptop. Games for Mac are sold separately. For example, say you purchase a game called The Sims on your PC. If you want to also play that game on your MacBook, you would have to repurchase the game since it is an entirely different system.
This is definitely one of the more common and longstanding forms of gaming. It is highly diverse as well. Consoles date back to the 1970s with Atari and are still incredibly popular by today's standard. Some popular and recent consoles would be:
  • Xbox
  • PlayStation
  • Nintendo Switch
  • Nintendo Wii
Handheld Gaming
Handheld gaming has been around since the late 1980s, but has evolved into a broader gaming type since then. Some of the console games above such as the Nintendo Switch doubles as both a regular console and a handheld console. This means it can be played as a system that is held in someone's hands and played right in front of them, but also can be connected to a TV and played on the screen as well. Some examples of popular handheld gaming consoles are:
  • Nintendo DS and related systems
  • Sony PlayStation Vita
